Media Release - Will you Step Up this Clean up Australia Day - 2 March 2022

The country’s largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day, is Katherine’s annual opportunity to focus on tackling the town’s waste, which has increased nationally because of the pandemic.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen a huge surge in online shopping, meal delivery services, and disposable masks, which has impacted the environment.

Mayor Clark said there has never been a better time to tackle the surge in single-use disposable items, such as takeaway coffee cups, food packaging, masks, and sanitised wipes that pollute our parks, bushland, streets and waterways.

“The change starts with us,” Mayor Clark said

“I encourage all residents to get involved with Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday.”

Registrations will be at Ryan Park (near the old Railway Bridge) from 7:30 am to 11:30 am.

Katherine Town Council will supply gloves and rubbish bags. Please remember to bring a hat, closed in shoes, a water bottle, and sunscreen.

All volunteers will receive a gift voucher for a free ice cream scoop and go in the draw to win some fantastic prizes.

Katherine Town Council thanks the Y Katherine and The Meeting Place for their support.
