Katherine Town Council Undertakes Review of Constitutional Arrangements

Pursuant to the provisions of Section 23 of the Local Government Act 2008, Katherine Town Council is undertaking a review to assess the adequacy of the constitutional arrangements presently in place and, in particular, whether they provide the most effective possible representation for the council area. 

 

Notice is hereby given that Council has prepared a detailed Consultation Paper which presents the preferred future composition and structure of Council, as well as information pertaining to all issues relevant to the review and elector representation in general. 

 

Katherine Town Council invites the community to review the constitutional arrangements and offers members of the public to have their say by undertaking the survey and/or to make comments by 5 pm Sunday 17th May 2020. Copies of the Consultation Paper can be viewed on the Katherine Town Council website or hard copies can be prearranged via phone 8972 5500.

 

Interested persons are invited to make a written submission to the Chief Executive Officer, PO Box 1071, Katherine NT 0850, Any submissions should specifically address the following issues.

  • The number of elected members (excluding the Mayor) required to adequately and fairly represent the electors of the council area and perform the roles and responsibilities of Council).
  • The title of the elected members (excluding the Mayor).
  • Whether the existing "no wards" structure should be retained or alternatively whether the council area should be divided into wards.
  • If the council area is to be divided into wards, what is the favoured future ward structure (in terms of configuration, number of wards and level of representation in each of the proposed wards.)
  • The name/identification of any proposed future wards.
  • Whether there should be changes to the existing name and/or boundaries of Council.
