Katherine was this week named a finalist in the national Top Tourism Town Awards with the Australian Tourism Industry Council to announce the winner at a ceremony in Canberra on the 14th of September.
The Top Tourism Town Awards showcase the value of tourism to towns and communities across Australia and celebrates the diversity and outstanding attributes of the nation’s regional destinations. Eligible towns must have a population of over 5000.
Katherine Town Council completed the submission, including the written response, pitched at the town’s target drive market. The response incorporated a motivational editorial and suggested four-day, three-night itinerary, along with a high quality two-minute promotional video that highlighted key attractions and experiences.
In its submission, Katherine Town Council cited recent upgrades to visitor facilities around town to showcase its commitment to growing tourism and welcoming visitors.
The upgrades included expanding overflow parking for big rigs and recreational vehicles in a space next to the Katherine Visitor Information Centre. Chilled water fountains are being installed in the CBD area and the potable water outlet has been moved near the dump point on Lindsay Street, near the visitor centre, to make it easier to access the water and find a park. The water will have 24/7 access and can be paid for with a card. Accessibility for the elderly and those with disabilities is also being improved with amenities around town.
The judges also averaged Review Pro’s Global Review Index (GRI) for five Katherine local accommodation providers and attractions to give the town of Katherine a score for its online reputation, mostly based on positive Trip Advisor reviews.
Judging comprised a panel of experts who scored the written submission, a public vote co-ordinated by Tourism NT for the best tourism town based on the videos and the town’s GRI.
Katherine will be up against Ballarat (Vic), Caloundra (Qld), Davenport (Tas), Mandurah (WA), Newcastle (NSW), Victor Harbour (SA) at the national awards.
