Katherine Town Council is seeking a reliable, safety-focused and community-minded individual to join our Infrastructure and Environment team as a Municipal Maintenance & Plant Operator.
Reporting directly to the Works Coordinator, this hands-on role is responsible for safely operating Council plant, machinery and equipment while helping maintain, improve and beautify Council assets and public spaces throughout the Katherine Municipality.
Duties include operating trucks, loaders, excavators, graders, rollers, skid-steer loaders, tractors, mowers, slashers and other equipment. You will also undertake irrigation maintenance and repairs, mowing, slashing, landscaping, minor civil works, general maintenance and waste facility operations.
The role supports the maintenance of roads, drainage networks, footpaths, parks, gardens, sporting fields, cemeteries, recreation facilities, buildings and other Council infrastructure.

About you
You will be a reliable and safety-conscious team member who takes pride in operating machinery responsibly and completing work to a high standard.
You will have:

A current Northern Territory Heavy Rigid Driver Licence.

At least two years’ experience in a similar operational role.

Demonstrated experience safely operating mobile plant and machinery.

Practical experience maintaining parks, gardens, lawns, turf or public open spaces.

Experience operating, monitoring, fault-finding and maintaining irrigation systems.

Experience undertaking general repairs and maintaining roads, footpaths, buildings or other infrastructure.

The physical capacity to undertake manual outdoor work for prolonged periods.

The ability to work effectively with limited supervision and communicate respectfully with colleagues, contractors and community members.

A strong commitment to workplace health and safety, plant pre-start inspections and safe manual-handling practices.
Experience or qualifications in civil construction, horticulture, turf management, irrigation, parks and gardens or waste management will be highly regarded. Relevant plant tickets, verification of competency, traffic-management qualifications, chemical-handling accreditation or trade qualifications will also be advantageous.
