Katherine Town Council is seeking an enthusiastic and highly organised Human Resource Officer to join our People and Culture team.

Reporting to the Manager People and Culture, this diverse and rewarding role is responsible for delivering payroll services, supporting recruitment and onboarding activities, maintaining HR systems, coordinating training programs and assisting with workforce compliance initiatives across Council.

About the Role

As the Human Resource Officer, you will:

Payroll

  • Process end-to-end fortnightly payroll and payroll adjustments

  • Experience with payroll system software is essential for effective processing and management of employee payments

  • Interpret Enterprise Agreements, awards, legislation and employment contracts

  • Maintain employee records and payroll master files

  • Administer leave entitlements, salary packaging and payroll reporting

  • Respond to employee payroll enquiries and provide guidance to staff

Human Resources

  • Assist with recruitment, advertising, onboarding and induction activities

  • Maintain HR records, forms and documentation

  • Administer HR systems and ensure ongoing compliance

  • Coordinate Council's training and development program

  • Maintain training records and coordinate skills gap analysis activities

  • Provide support and advice to employees regarding HR policies, procedures and systems

  • Assist with workforce planning and employee engagement initiatives

  • Support workplace health and safety administration activities

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Previous experience in Human Resources, Payroll, Administration or a related field

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in Human Resources, Payroll, Administration or related field

  • Strong understanding of payroll processes and employment conditions

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain confidential information

  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

  • Experience preparing reports and reviewing data for accuracy and compliance

  • Confidence communicating with employees, managers and external stakeholders

  • Ability to interpret and explain policies, procedures and legislation

  • Valid Australian work authorisation is required for this position

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Certificate IV or higher qualification in Human Resources, Business Administration, Payroll, Finance or a related discipline

  • Previous Local Government experience

  • Experience using Xero, payroll and workforce management systems

  • Current NT Driver Licence
