Waste Management Update as Clean-Up Efforts Continue

Katherine Town Council has implemented changes to waste management arrangements today, as flood clean-up operations continue across town.

From Friday, 20 March, the Council’s Waste Management Facility will reopen to the public for a limited range of items. Flood-affected waste will continue to be accepted free of charge, while standard fees and charges will apply to all other materials.

The temporary waste management facility at the Katherine Weigh Bridge will close to public access at the close of business on Thursday, 19th March and will remain operational only for authorised contractors.

Verge collection services will continue to focus on flood-affected waste. Council has observed an increase in non-flood-related items being placed on verges and delivered to temporary facilities, which is impacting the efficiency of clean-up operations.

Mayor Joanna Holden said it was important the community continue to work together to ensure resources are directed where they are most needed.

“This is a large-scale clean-up effort, and we need to keep the focus on supporting those households and businesses directly impacted by the floods,” she said.

“We’re asking residents to only place flood-damaged items on the verge and continue using their regular kerbside bins for general household waste.”

Council reminds the community:

  • Only flood-damaged items should be placed on verges for collection
  • General household and food waste should go in kerbside bins
  • The temporary waste facility is restricted to authorised contractors
  • The Waste Management Facility is open to the public under standard conditions

All arrangements remain subject to weather conditions and may change as required.

Council thanks the community for its cooperation and ongoing support during the recovery process.
