The newly upgraded public toilet block at the Lindsay Street Complex is now open, offering modern, accessible facilities and a visual tribute to Katherine’s military history.
The exterior of the building features decorative metal panels designed to reflect key moments in the town’s wartime past, including the 1942 bombing of Katherine. The laser-cut panels combine imagery with interpretive text sourced from the Katherine Museum, turning a functional facility into a public storytelling space.
CEO Ingrid Stonhill said the panels are a beautiful and unique way to honour our local history while also upgrading important community infrastructure.
“The panels build on a theme started with the metal work etchings inside and around the new ‘Outback Outhouse’ near the Visitor Centre, which also showcases Katherine’s culture and history.
“The locally made artwork transforms a basic community convenience into a meaningful community landmark,” Ms Stonhill said.
The Lindsay Street project replaced outdated toilets that were past their useful life. They were difficult to maintain and non-compliant with modern design standards. The new facilities now include:
- Wheelchair-accessible toilets
- Ambulant cubicles
- Baby change facilities
- Standard urinals and toilets
- Improved ventilation and easier maintenance features
The upgrade enhances the Lindsay Street Complex amenities, supporting users of the space, including event organisers and market stallholders.
