More than 2,600 people gathered at the Katherine Showgrounds last night to celebrate Katherine's 100th birthday, with a memorable Territory Day event bringing the community together to mark this historic milestone.
Supported by the Northern Territory Government and delivered by Katherine Town Council, the free community event featured the Mayor's official welcome, recognition of the 2026 Chief Minister's Medal recipients, live entertainment, the Centenary Auction, the cutting of Katherine's Centenary Cake, a display of historic photos, and a spectacular fireworks finale.
Mayor Joanna Holden said the event was a proud moment for the Katherine community.
"This was a fantastic night for Katherine. Seeing thousands of people come together to celebrate our town, catch up with friends and enjoy everything the evening had to offer was something really special."
"Our Centenary is about celebrating the people, stories and community spirit that have shaped Katherine over the past 100 years. Last night was a wonderful reflection of that."
The celebration featured performances by Tom Curtain, Dylan Wright and Jem Cassar-Daley, before a nine-minute fireworks display brought the evening to a close. More than 11.5 kilograms of birthday cake and 120 cupcakes were shared with the community.
The community also got behind the Katherine Museum, with the live auction of the KC100 Centenary number plate and other donated items raising $11,250. The number plate itself sold for $5000. Combined with $3,334 from Centenary Bar ticket sales, a total of $14,584 will support the Museum's work preserving Katherine's history.
Mayor Holden thanked everyone who helped make the event possible.
"We appreciate the Northern Territory Government's support in helping make this celebration happen. I'd also like to thank our Council staff, contractors and volunteers who worked so hard behind the scenes to deliver such a successful event."
"Most of all, thank you to everyone who came along and celebrated with us. The atmosphere throughout the night was incredible, and it's something our community can be proud of."
While the official Centenary birthday has now been celebrated, Katherine's Centenary program continues with the Centenary Street Parade and the National Trust’s Railway Fair on Saturday.
