Katherine Town Council is urging residents to nominate the people and events that make our town a better place for the 2026 Katherine Citizen of the Year Awards.
The 2026 Awards will coincide with Katherine’s centenary, so it’s an opportunity to shine a light on the community spirit that is our town’s foundation. That spirit is the glue that has held our town together through often enormous challenges over the past 100 years. From neighbours who quietly lend a hand to young leaders and volunteers who bring people together, the awards are our chance to recognise effort, reward dedication, and say thank you.
Nominations are open in three categories:
- Citizen of the Year – for residents aged 30 and over who have made an exceptional contribution.
- Young Citizen of the Year – for residents under 30 who inspire through leadership, service or achievement.
- Community Event of the Year – for groups, organisations or volunteers who deliver events that unite and strengthen Katherine.
“Katherine is built on people who give their time and energy for the benefit of others. If you know someone like that, don’t let it pass unnoticed; take the extra step and nominate them. These awards are how we turn appreciation into reward for effort,” Mayor Joanna Holden said.
“Nominating is simple, and if anyone has trouble with the form, Council staff are ready to help over the phone or in person.”
Nominations close Saturday, 15 November 2025. Shortlisted nominees will be recognised at a special dinner on Friday 23 January, with the winners announced on Australia Day during the Citizenship Ceremony.
Last year’s recipients were Ethan Woods-Alum (Citizen of the Year), Rupert Trembath (Young Citizen of the Year), and the Katherine Multisports Club’s Katherine Ultra Challenge (Community Event of the Year).
Local winners may go on to be considered for the Territorian of the Year Awards, with Territory recipients eligible for the Australian of the Year Awards.
