Katherine Town Council is inviting nominations for the 2027 Citizen of the Year Awards.
This is your chance to recognise the unsung heroes of 2026.
Katherine is what it is, because of the countless individuals who bring us all together. From neighbours who quietly lend a hand to young leaders and volunteers who inspire the next generation, the awards are our chance to recognise effort, reward dedication, and say thank you.
Nominations are open in three categories:
- Citizen of the Year – Australian citizens aged 30 and over who have made an exceptional contribution throughout the year.
- Young Citizen of the Year – Australian citizens aged 16-29 who inspired through leadership, service or achievement throughout 2026.
- Community Event of the Year – for groups, organisations or volunteers who delivered events that united and strengthened Katherine in 2026.
“This year has been nothing less than historic for Katherine. It has shown us that the spirit of Katherine is its people and their willingness to give a helping hand whatever the circumstances,” Mayor Joanna Holden said.
“From those who unfailingly wash sports jerseys each week to those who respond to emergencies, Katherine’s spirit is its people, the volunteers and community groups.
“Know a person, group or event that has made an exceptional voluntary contribution to Katherine? The legends who show up, pitch in and make things happen? Nominate them today. Don’t leave it to someone else — help us celebrate those shaping Katherine’s next 100 years.”
Nominations close Sunday, 15 November 2026. Shortlisted nominees will be invited to an evening of celebration on Monday 25 January 2027.
Winners will be announced at the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony.
Last year’s winners were Simmone Croft (Citizen of the Year), Kate McTaggart (Young Citizen of the Year), and the Katherine Community Projects Association – Christmas Lights (Community Event of the Year).
Local winners may go on to be considered for the Territorian of the Year Awards, with Territory recipients eligible for the Australian of the Year Awards.
