Media Release - Community Hero receives OAM

Katherine Town Council Deputy Mayor Denis Coburn was honoured to witness long-time resident and renowned rubbish warrior Jenny Duggan awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) at the recent Kings Birthday Honours at Government House in Darwin.

Mrs Duggan was awarded her OAM in recognition of her service to the community of Katherine. She has been a community philanthropist for over 40 years and a foundational member and volunteer in numerous community and fundraising groups.

Katherine Town Council CEO Ingrid Stonhill said small towns rely on the efforts of volunteers to thrive, and there's no better example of someone who has devoted much of their time to the wellbeing of others than Mrs Duggan.

Mrs Duggan has been a Clean Up Australia Day coordinator, a Volunteer Organiser for the Rubbish Reserve Rubbish Warrior for over two decades and a long-time volunteer for Landcare Australia.

She organised the Katherine Babysitting Club and is a Life Member of the Katherine Playgroup. She is a volunteer and Katherine Region Coordinator and Representative for Neighbourhood Watch NT and a Life Member and volunteer for the Katherine Ladies' Beefsteak and Burgundy Club.

For the St Vincent de Paul Society, Mrs Duggan is a Management Committee Member of Ormonde House and a Volunteer and Management Committee Member of the Katherine Centre of Charity Op Shop. She is a former board member of the Northern Territory Council and former President and member of St Joseph's Conference Katherine.

Mrs Duggan is also a Life Member, former Secretary and Treasurer of the Barbarians Rugby Union Club, and Founding Member, Treasurer, Festival Coordinator and Life Member of the Katherine Kroes Golden Oldies Rugby Club.

Mrs Duggan has been awarded Katherine Town Council Citizen of the Year and has won a tourism award for Keeping Katherine Tidy.
