Council calls for fresh ideas as Community Grants open

Katherine Town Council’s Community Grants Program will open on 22 August 2026, with refreshed guidelines and a new application template designed to make it easier for local groups to understand the program and put forward their ideas.

Council is looking to support a diverse range of projects, activities and events that benefit the different people, interests and communities that make up Katherine.

Grants provide one-off assistance for initiatives that deliver a clear benefit to the Katherine community, from smaller community projects and activities through to major community events.

Projects might encourage people to participate in community life, create more inclusive activities, support volunteers and local organisations, bring a new idea to Katherine, or provide more opportunities for locals and visitors to connect and get involved.

Grants of up to $2,000 are available for community projects and activities, with up to $5,000 available for major community events.

The new Community Grants Guidelines and application template provide clearer information about what can be funded, what applicants need to provide and how applications will be assessed.

Council is holding two public information sessions to help applicants understand the grants and ask questions before applying. The sessions will be held at the Katherine Visitor Information Centre, corner Lindsay St and Stuart Hwy.

  1. Monday 24 August 2026, 5 pm–6 pm
  2. Tuesday 15 September 2026, 5 pm–6 pm

These sessions will provide an overview of the Community Grants Program, including how it works, what activities and projects are eligible for funding, what Council considers when assessing applications, and the information applicants should include in their submissions.

The sessions also offer an opportunity to discuss potential project ideas, seek guidance and ask questions. Council particularly encourages groups that have not previously applied for a Community Grant to attend.

If your organisation or community group has an idea but you are unsure whether it is eligible, which funding category it may fit within, or how to approach the application process, these information sessions are an excellent place to start.

Applications will be assessed on the benefit they provide to the Katherine community, value for money, how well the project has been planned and can be delivered, the applicant’s own contribution and how well the proposal meets the objectives of the Community Grants Program.

Applications open Saturday, 22 August 2026 and close Saturday, 17 October 2026. You can view guidelines here
