Katherine Town Council has adopted its Municipal Plan 2026/27, which sets the Council's priorities, budget, work program and rates and charges for the year ahead. The adopted Plan reflects community feedback received during consultation and outlines how Council will continue delivering essential services while investing in Katherine's future.

The consultation attracted strong community interest. On Your Say Katherine, 223 people viewed the project, 123 accessed detailed information and 106 downloaded the draft documents. The public also picked up copies of the summary snapshot document at stalls manned by elected members outside Woolworths and at the Katherine Research Station open day during the three-week consultation period. The community feedback received throughout the consultation period was considered before Council adopted the final Plan.

Mayor Joanna Holden acknowledged those who took the time to review the draft documents and provide feedback.

"Thank you to everyone who participated in the consultation process. Community feedback plays an important role in helping Council shape its priorities and ensure we continue delivering services and projects that matter most to our residents," Mayor Holden said.

The Municipal Plan focuses on getting the basics right while planning for Katherine's future. During 2026/27, Council will continue to maintain roads, drainage, parks, playgrounds, public spaces, and waste services, while progressing a range of projects designed to improve liveability across the municipality.

Key initiatives planned for the year include:

  • progressing a Service Level Delivery Assessment to better understand community expectations and guide future planning
  • developing a Waste Management Strategy
  • undertaking cemetery infrastructure improvements
  • continuing the popular Native Plant Giveaway program
  • seeking funding to deliver Hot Springs toilet upgrades
  • pursuing funding for Cooling the Town Square initiatives, including a permanent shade structure.

Mayor Holden said the Plan also demonstrated Council's commitment to responsible financial management.

"Our focus is on balancing investment in infrastructure and community facilities with the responsible management of public funds, while continuing to provide the services our community relies on every day."
