With the 2025 Northern Territory Local Government elections approaching on Saturday, August 23, Katherine Town Council is kicking off community engagement with the return of its popular quiz – this time, with a fresh twist.
“People in Katherine love to debate how long someone has to live here before they’re a ‘local’,” said CEO Ingrid Stonhill. “So we’re leaning into that humour again – but this time, we’re using it to get people thinking about what they can bring to their community if they put their hand up to run for Council.”
The quiz, titled Blow-In, Resident, Local or Katherinite?, invites participants to find out where they sit on the Katherine identity scale – and more importantly, how each of those identities brings unique perspectives and strengths to local government.
“It doesn’t matter if you’ve been here five months or five decades – good governance benefits from a diversity of voices,” Ms Stonhill said. “We want people to see how their experience, ideas and local knowledge can shape the future of Katherine.”
Nominations for elected member positions open on Friday, July 11 and close on Thursday, July 31. Council encourages anyone with a passion for Katherine and a willingness to serve their community to consider nominating.
“Local government touches almost every aspect of daily life – from the parks our kids play in to the planning decisions that shape our future,” Ms Stonhill said. “It’s the level of government closest to the people, and it needs people who care.”
The quiz uses a light-hearted tone to make civic participation more accessible and reminds residents to check and update their electoral enrolment by Tuesday, July 22.
“Voting is the easiest way to influence the decisions that affect your life,” Ms Stonhill said. “And being enrolled helps ensure Katherine gets the services and funding it deserves.”
