Katherine Town Council is constructing an electric vehicle (EV) charging station in the Lindsay Street Complex Car Park, linking Katherine with the national network of fast, multi-vehicle charging sites.
The charging station is a jointly funded federal government and NRMA project that delivers 117 charging sites around Australia, ensuring there is a fast charger around every 150 kilometres on national highways.
The network aims to reduce ‘range anxiety’ associated with long-distance trips, encouraging more holidaymakers to feel confident about making their journey in an EV.
Katherine Town Council CEO Ingrid Stonhill said the fast charging station is conveniently located near the Visitor Information Centre.
“The initiative reflects Council’s commitment to a cleaner, greener environment, and its location allows tourists to grab a coffee at the Visitor Information Centre and discover things to do and see around the region while their vehicle is charging,” Ms Stonhill said.
“It’s also a central, easy-to-reach spot for residents.”
Currently, EV drivers charge their vehicles at Katherine Showgrounds, which requires them to make a payment and collect a key and a mud map from the Civic Centre before heading to the Showgrounds.
The construction work started this week and is scheduled for completion in early 2024.
