Construction on the long-awaited Sportsgrounds Pavilion Redevelopment has commenced this week.

Successful contractor, Norbuilt Pty Ltd has today commenced the process of demolishing the existing building to make way for a new, fit-for-purpose facility to support a large part of the Katherine sporting community at the Sportsgrounds facility.

The need for upgrading the pavilion was identified by Katherine Town Council and the multiple community groups who use this facility on a weekly basis. The facility will include new and improved kitchen/canteen facilities, storage, office space, clubrooms, ablutions and versatile community space. The works will also include the upgrading of the adjacent carpark and road elements of the pavilion.

The $5.9M project has been jointly funded by Katherine Town Council and the Northern Territory Government Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture ($4.49M), Department of Local Government, Housing and Community Development ($150,000), and Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics ($250,000). This upgraded infrastructure will benefit both local and visiting users of this popular sportsground and support the community’s love for sport.

Northern Territory Government Minister for Sport, Kate Worden said a new Sportsground Pavilion in Katherine will create more sporting opportunities for the community.

“The Territory Government is all about providing opportunities for Territorians. The establishment of this new sporting pavilion will give more space for teams to train, along with bigger clubrooms and storage facilities.

“This project is also creating much needed jobs for Territorians, while also supporting local business”, Minister Worden said.

“We are thankful for the Northern Territory Governments funding contribution to enable this much needed facility upgrade that will benefit the community and hopefully enable more people to participate in sport to be active, healthy and have fun”, said Mayor Lis Clark

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021. We ask for your cooperation, patience and to please adhere to all signage during the construction phase.
