Katherine’s commitment to recycling was recently celebrated with a win in the Circular Economy category at the Keep Australia Beautiful Council NT Sustainable Communities Awards.

Katherine Town Council CEO Ingrid Stonhill said the Council is intent on helping Katherine develop its sustainability through recycling initiatives.

This year, the Council instigated a six-month recycling trial in Katherine East, providing 250 households with recycling bins at no cost to residents.

The Council invested $30,000 in the trial, which diverted 15,000 kilograms of household waste from Katherine’s landfill to the Shoal Bay recycling facility in Darwin.

Ms Stonhill said the Council also upgraded Katherine’s Waste Management Facility, which included reopening the popular Tip Shop.

“Katherine residents have a passion for repurposing pre-loved goods, which lies at the heart of a functioning circular economy,” Ms Stonhill said.

“Having our dedication to recycling and re-using publicly recognised is a lovely bonus, and it does bring some extra energy into expanding the opportunities we deliver and support to minimise what we put into landfill.”
