2021 we have two excellent Australia Day Ambassadors - Bob Shwering & Marg Chamberlain

Bob Shewring

Twenty five of the 521 Australians killed in the Vietnam War didn’t make it home to Australia and Vietnam veteran Bob Shewring was determined to rectify this terrible wrong. Bob founded Operation “Bring Them Home" in 2014 and garnered over 40,000 signatures through an online petition before the Australian Government agreed in May 2015 to repatriate these soldiers’ bodies. Bob continues to Advocate on the behalf of Veterans and others in attempting to reduce the number of suicides of veterans and first responders. He is currently President of Veterans Australia NT, a Board Member of RSL SA/NT State Board and President of National Seniors Australia NT Topend. Bob Shewring was a previous resident of Katherine in the early 80’s where he was the Regional Coordinator for TAFE in the Katherine Region. As a result of his efforts, he was awarded by the Australia Day Council the 2016 NT Senior Australian of the Year, and just recently he was recognised and awarded the 2020 Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering Award by Volunteers Australia NT.

Marg Chamberlain

Marg Chamberlain is a Katherine Local resident and was a nominee for Australian of the Year 2021. She is the Principal at Kintore Street Special School which is for students with physical and intellectual impairments where she led the development from a single classroom to two campuses, increasing its ability to cater to the needs of the community. Marg is also one of the top Para swimming and athletic referees in the world, officiating at the para-Olympics in Beijing and Athens as well as multiple world championships. Marg has also volunteered for 2 years in Mongolia where she worked to improve access to education for children with disabilities and to train teachers and parents in providing appropriate resources and skills.
