Uncover the history of the Katherine Public Pool

Before Katherine had a public swimming pool, cooling off usually meant heading to the river. For generations, locals swam at places like the Low Level.

As Katherine grew through the 1960s and 1970s, the need for a safe, reliable swimming facility became more important. Natural swimming spots were seasonal, weather-dependent, and increasingly affected by safety concerns. Schools, families and sporting clubs needed a place where children could learn to swim, hold carnivals, and enjoy the water in a controlled environment.

The original 50-metre pool was constructed by Sitzler in 1982 and marked a major milestone for Katherine. For the first time, schools could regularly run swimming lessons and competitions, and young people had a dedicated place to gather, train and socialise.

The Aquatic Centre has been redeveloped over the past 12 months and was officially reopened in December 2025.
