Media Release - Katherine Town Council Shakes Up Clean Up

Katherine Town Council is innovating its annual Clean Up Australia event this year, inviting people to clean up whichever patch of Katherine's paradise suits them best.

In previous years, the national clean up event has seen a diminishing emu parade of committed locals meet at Ryan Park on 3 March to pick up rubbish along the Katherine River corridor.

This year, the Council is shifting the event online, using its popular Snap, Send, Solve app to host the cleanup, with locals invited to clean up whenever they like, wherever they choose, from the 1st to the 31st of March.

Council CEO Ingrid Stonhill said the Council will collate data on which locations are being cleaned up through the Snap, Send, Solve's geo-mapping capabilities.
"We have seen fewer people attending the Ryan Park event over the years, so it is time to change it up and give people more time and more opportunities to participate and to care for areas that matter most to them," Ms Stonhill said.

"Participants can collect gloves and rubbish and recycling bags from the Civic Centre and send a photo of themselves collecting rubbish to Council through the Snap, Send, Solve app to get a $20 voucher for a local café or movie pass with popcorn and a drink."

Ms Stonhill said the clean-up is also a good opportunity for people to learn more about Katherine’s recycling opportunities, including scrap metal, electronics disposal, car batteries and the 10-cent refund on containers, offered by MT Bins.
