Media Release - Council Trial Ends: Recycling Contractor unable to continue

Published on Tuesday, 23 January 2024 at 4:25:12 PM

Katherine Town Council today announced the town’s sole recycling contractor is unable to continue to provide his services, leaving Council unable to continue its Katherine East recycling trial.

Council CEO Ingrid Stonhill said it was incredibly disappointing, particularly given Council’s recent award for its commitment to developing a circular economy.

“Unfortunately, the Katherine-based contractor who was providing the recycling service for our trial is no longer able to provide this service, and there are no other recycling service providers in town,” Ms Stonhill said

“The community’s interest in kerbside recycling was evident, and we were excited to expand it this year, but this current situation underscores the difficulties in sustainable waste management in regional Australia.

“We will continue to explore all options, but until we come up with a viable alternative, the trial will cease immediately.”

Council advised the recycling bins remain Council property, and its officers will advise trial participants when they will be collected.
