Council is pleased to announce that a new Waste Management Strategy has been adopted.
Katherine Town Council has developed a Waste Management Strategy to guide its decision making over the next five (5) years and to further improve and implement sustainable practices. Council intention is to deliver an affordable waste service whilst meeting operational and future infrastructure cost.
Council aims to optimise the use of the current Waste Management Facility and to plan for future infrastructure needs. Council plans to work with contractors and businesses to find ways of reducing the waste burden and operational cost on Commercial Users, Community and Council.
Within the strategy, Council commits to participate in Keep Australia Beautiful and community education, initiatives and programs. Council encourages the community to attend Clean Up Australia Day – Sunday 7 March 2021, click here for more information.
Council is exploring opportunities to partner with others to develop the following;
- Nursery
- Tip shop
- Education centre
- Green waste mulching operation
- Cottage industry business incubator
- Sustainable procurement policy advice service
Council has identified immediate measures to assist with cost-effective and efficient daily operations that will be enhanced by upgrading the current transfer station, plant and equipment.
There will be a phased closure of the landfill over several years for the capping and rehabilitation as each section reaches capacity. Work has already commenced on securing a suitable site for a new landfill.
The current site will be upgraded to a waste transfer station and will remain open to receive domestic and commercial waste with opportunities to separate waste into various recycling streams. Any remaining waste destined for landfill will then be trucked out to the new site. The new site will not be open to the public.
