Thanks to the generous support of St John Ambulance Australia (NT) Inc. (St John NT), the Katherine Visitor Information Centre is now the newest location for a lifesaving Automated External defibrillator (AED).
These life-saving devices aim to increase the chances of survival from sudden cardiac arrest victims.
St John NT aims to register 1000 defibs across the Northern Territory by the end of 2021 in a bid to increase survival rates of visitors and Territorians.
Currently over 30,000 Australians suffer from a sudden cardiac arrest and as few as 1 in 10 people will survive a sudden cardiac arrest. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere and at any age. An AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest and is an easy to operate tool for someone with absolutely no medical background.
This unit will go a long way in helping us increase victims' chances of survival.
In addition to the installation of the AED, all Visitor Information Centre Officers have undertaken training and the location of the AED, and all community-based AED's throughout Australia are registered through the St John Ambulance Australia apps, Resuscitate and First Responder.
