Katherine turns 100 in July 2026 and council is getting preparations underway to celebrate this milestone.
“There’s a lot of history packed into those years and we want to make sure this gets done right,” Katherine Mayor Lis Clark said.
Expressions of interest (EOI) are now open to residents interested in sitting on the Centenary of Katherine 2026 Advisory Committee. This move, approved at the council meeting on Tuesday December 13, was in response to residents notifying council of their interest.
“It’s an important role,” Ms Clark said. “Members will represent the community to provide guidance for what celebration they want.”
July 1, 2026, marks 100 years since the original declaration of the town. This was also the same year that the old Railway Bridge was opened.
Council advisory committees are one way for the community to provide input or advice to council on an ongoing basis and those sitting on the committee will represent the community, government and business. They will assist council by providing guidance on infrastructure, events and funding opportunities for this event.
Members will include all Katherine Town Council councillors, a council director, a representative from the Northern Territory Government and, from this EOI, six members will be selected who represent the community, community organisations, and business.
Nominations will be provided to Council to consider at the February 2023 Ordinary Meeting of Council.
