Katherine Community to benefit from $6.4 million for Sports and Showsgrounds facilities fundingposted 24-Jul-2018
The Northern Territory Government announced last week $6.4 million will be spent on improving Katherine’s sporting and entertainment facilities, through the NTG Capital Grants.
The funding boost will help deliver key improvements identified by both the Katherine Sportsground and the Katherine Showgrounds user groups. Extensive consultation with the users highlighted suggestions and areas for growth. Key improvements that have been considered include:
- $4.4 million at the Katherine Sportsground to improve the existing Don Dale Sports Pavilion including additional storage and car parking, road upgrades and general facilities upgrades.
- $2 million for the Katherine Showgrounds including upgrades to oval lighting, fencing, camp draft facilities, improvements to the Turf Pavilion, shelters for grandstands, shading of the equestrian area and road upgrades.
Member for Katherine, Sandra Nelson, the Mayor of Katherine Town Council, Fay Miller and sportsground user representative, Annette Schefe, were present to announce the impact and benefits for the Katherine Community.
“These facilities host popular events such as community shows, concerts, rodeos and local sports so it is crucial they are maintained and upgraded to provide positive, quality experiences of participants and attendees,” said Member for Katherine, Sandra Nelson.
“Katherine Town Council is absolutely delighted at the long term planning that is coming into fruition. We are very appreciative of all the Northern Territory Government commitments,” said Katherine Town Council’s Mayor, Fay Miller.
“I think this is fantastic for the Community to benefit from using the grounds and who hire the Sportsground facilities. We will be able to host inter-state championships. As far as rugby league, it would be great to see a club from the NRL to come to Katherine to play. It will give more groups more space to store supplies at the grounds. The rugby league have been issued a major grant from the Community benefit Fund, so with the new building planned, it will compliment this space,” said Annette Schefe.
The next stage of this project will include community consultation with the various stakeholders to finalise the design plans and receive feedback to achieve the best sports centre for the Katherine Community.
Katherine Town Council is extremely pleased to be working with the Northern Territory Government and the Local Member for Katherine to improve the social and recreational facilities available to the Community.
