Katherine Community to benefit from $5 million CBD Revitalisation

posted 25-Jul-2018

The Katherine CBD will receive a significant revamp to its town centre thanks to a $5 million grant from the Northern Territory Government.

These improvements form part of the 8 Great Projects in Katherine, the first being the ‘The Heart of Katherine’ that plans to revitalise the existing CBD primarily using four green anchor spaces – the town square, Railway Terrace linear parklands, Ryan Park and the Visitor Information Centre.

The grant money will inject a huge economic benefit into the local businesses, shop owners and everyone that will use the CBD – tourists and residents alike to enjoy. Plans are to improve safety, security and create a functional and engaging CBD. Some of the potential improvements include:

  • Signage, road and infrastructure improvements, parking, lighting, pedestrian connectivity and access, WIFI/CCTV and public toilets.
  • Landscape architecture, revitalising major parks, function centre considerations, landscape improvements and installation of paving and street furniture.
  • Continued town planning development.

Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler said, “The projects would not only revitalise the Katherine CBD, but support local jobs and businesses. This is part of an overall plan to create an enriching community that is engaging and functional for local residents and visitors alike”.

Member for Katherine, Sandra Nelson said, “This funding will help create jobs, support businesses and ensure these vital facilities in Katherine continue to provide social, cultural and economic benefits to the community.”

Katherine Town Council is excited to see these improvements coming to Katherine and the 8 Great Projects in Katherine 8 being funded one by one.  “This generous decision marks another successful milestone in the delivery of the Katherine Master Plan that Council, NT Government and the Federal Government are working on to the benefit of our community,” said the Mayor of Katherine Town Council, Fay Miller.

Katherine Town Council is looking forward to further engagement with the community to hear suggestions and receive feedback on how the Community wants their CBD function.
