Katherine benefits from $827K airport upgradeposted 04-Jul-2018
This month saw the completion of upgrades to the RAAF Base Tindal Civil Airport, leased by Katherine Town Council, with an $827K overhaul of the apron parking and aircraft manoeuvring areas . The upgrades, funded by the Northern Territory Government through the Department of Infrastructure, Planning & Logistics will bring much needed benefits to the facility with increased movement capacity and safety for aircraft.
The upgrade brings an important economic boost to the township, supporting the tourism transport and freight industries.
“The completed apron will extend the airports capacity and improve the overall condition to all users,” said Mr Jamie Craven, Executive Manager – Infrastructure & Environment.
The final step in the works was completed this week with new line marking for the entire apron, providing a clearer and safer path for aircraft parking.
These safety improvements will benefit all hour aircraft users, particularly critical emergency providers such as Careflight and the Department of Health.
“Katherine Airport is one of the busiest for CareFlight and its great to see the Katherine Town Council continuing to invest in improvements to the facilities and amenities that we rely on in the town, says General Manager – Northern Operations, CareFlight, Craig Gibbons.
“Katherine Town Council would like to thank the Department of Defence RAAF Base Tindal, major airport users who were regularly called on to assist in moving aircraft around at very short notice, and all airport users for their patience and cooperation to allow works to be completed without any major interruptions.” said Mr Jamie Craven, Executive Manager – Infrastructure & Environment.
