Rates and Charges
Council rates are levied on each rateable property to raise funds to provide services and facilities to the community of Katherine.
Katherine Town Council aims to keep rates as low as possible, consistent with Council’s responsibility for the provision of services and management of assets.
Due to recent changes to the Local Government Act, Council are now required to publish Rates Declarations for the past three (3) years. Please find below Rates Declarations for 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19
Annual Rates Notices (1 July – 30 June) are issued every August with the option to pay in four (4) instalments. Instalment dates are as below:
- 19 October
- 30 November
- 31 January
- 31 March
Payment reminders are advertised in local print media and residents can now sign up for a free quarterly SMS reminder service.
PLEASE NOTE: Katherine Town Council will NOT issue quarterly rates reminders so please take the time to enter the instalment dates on to your calendar.
You may choose to pay your rate in full by the first instalment date. Ratepayers who pay the full amount (including any arrears) by the first instalment date will be automatically included in Katherine Town Council’s Early Bird Draw. Eligible ratepayers can win a refund up to the value of $500 off their rates. (Government Departments, Council Staff and Elected Members are not eligible)
If your payment is not received by the due date, the account will be in arrears. Accounts in arrears will incur a penalty that is calculated on a daily basis on the outstanding amount ONLY, from the date on which the missed instalment was due until the date the payment is made in full.
Penalties for late payments are charged at 9% per annum.
